Life in the Crucible is a ministry devoted to helping people navigate the real and often difficult challenges of life.
A crucible is a heat-resistant container used to melt or refine substances at high temperatures. For us, it represents the intense seasons of life—times of testing, pressure, and change. These crucible moments can arise from work, family, school, relationships, or any circumstance that stretches and shapes who we are becoming.
Life in the Crucible exists to help you walk through those moments with purpose and hope.
Our ministry is rooted in the teaching and experience of Dr. Sandy Shugart, who brings more than 30 years of leadership across business, healthcare, and ministry contexts. As a former chairman of a large healthcare organization, a ministry leader, and a singer-songwriter and poet, Dr. Shugart offers a unique and deeply personal perspective. Through his guidance, participants are invited on an inward journey—learning to do the interior work necessary to live and lead well in the midst of life’s trials.
Rather than relying on large conferences or one-way teaching, we embrace a more personal and relational approach called Oikos—the Greek word for “household.” This model reflects the way early believers gathered in homes, among trusted networks of family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. These smaller, intentional settings create space for meaningful conversation, authentic connection, and thoughtful exploration of the questions people are actually asking. As Sandy often says, “We don’t want to provide answers to questions people aren’t asking.”
The ministry began to take shape in 2019, when Dr. Shugart was invited to speak and lead seminars based on his book, Leadership in the Crucible of Work. Opportunities expanded internationally, including engagements with Christian leaders in Albania after the book was translated into Albanian. To create a more engaging and memorable experience, Sandy incorporated music into these gatherings, forming The January Band.
Today, Life in the Crucible blends teaching, storytelling, music, and personal testimony to create environments where people can encounter the Gospel in a fresh and meaningful way. We partner with local believers who gather their own communities, creating spaces where trust already exists and transformation can take root.
Our Mission
To equip and encourage individuals to navigate life’s crucible moments through inward transformation, authentic community, and a deeper understanding of the Gospel—so they can live and lead well in every area of life.
Our Vision
We envision a growing network of Christ-centered communities meeting in homes and everyday spaces around the world—where people engage honestly with life’s challenges, experience personal renewal, and become catalysts for transformation in their families, workplaces, and communities.
Core Values
We believe true transformation is a work of God within the human heart. While it is experienced internally, it is initiated and sustained by Him. As we respond in faith, He shapes us from the inside out—forming how we live, love, and lead through every season of life.
